Earth Day is almost here again – a day to really appreciate and take care of the Earth that has provided a home for us since the begin of our existence.

The next time you step outside, take a deep breath! Not only does our planet provide us with good air to breathe, but even indoors you have good, breathable, air thanks to your HVAC system!

Make sure that you are doing your part to keep the air we all breathe clean, both indoors and outdoors. Not sure how you can do that? Reliability Home Services is here to help with some tips just for you!

What You Can Do to Purify Air in Your Home

There are several different ways you can go about purifying the air in your home and/or office. One way is to install an air purifier, but those can be expensive and take up valuable floor space in your house. Here are a couple of great alternatives for air purification:
  • Salt lamps- Himalayan salt lamps are scientifically proven to improve air quality by emitting negative ions into the air.
  • Plants- planting a small windowsill garden, or even keeping one or two live plants inside your home can help keep your indoor air clean since plants naturally consume carbon dioxide and convert it to clean oxygen.

How Air Filters Affect Indoor Air Quality

Another thing you can do to improve your air quality is to change your air filter regularly. Have you noticed your home seems to be excessively dusty lately?

That may be because it’s been too long since you changed or cleaned your filter! Your filter should be changed (or washed, if you use an environmentally friendly reusable filter) about every 60-90 days.

The products you use to clean your home could also be affecting your air quality. Switching to non-toxic, chemical-free cleaners like vinegar and essential oils will not only improve your air quality (and respiratory health), but it is also better for the environment.

Use Outdoor Ventilation to Your Advantage

Finally, if you need a breath of fresh air in your home, let some fresh air in! Occasionally turning off your HVAC system and opening a few windows to let in some of the fresh outdoor air can refresh and renew your indoor air.

This is an especially good idea during this time of year since the temperature is mild enough that you can have your windows open all day. While cleaning up the air in your home and improving your indoor air quality is important, what are you doing to improve outdoor air quality?

Remember that we only get one Earth, so it’s important that we all do our part to protect her.
